Media in Tenerife for English speakers

Tenerife is a Spanish island but it has a large pecentage of ex-pats from the UK and English speakers both visiting and living on the island. Because of this there are a number of popular media available for the English-speaking public.

Tenerife has its own newspapers, magazines, websites and radio stations in the English language, however, due to the worldwide economic crisis some of these have had to close down.

Of course, there are many other publications, as well as radio and TV stations in Spanish.

Tenerife newspapers and magazines

Island Connections and Tenerife News are the two newspapers with the biggest distribution but there is also Canarian Weekly that is published by the Oasis FM radio station in the south of the island.

The newspapers cover all the features you would expect and include articles on entertainment, eating out, out and about, health matters, and sport, as well as local and international news, and a section for jobs, advertising, property sales and rental.

The papers are generally free and are left in piles in places where they can be collected by readers, however, some shops and kiosks charge a 1.50€ cover price for them.

There was also the Tenerife Sun but this has stopped printing a hard copy paper and only exists online as a website now entitled News in the Sun. And there was The Paper, which as far as I can tell closed last year but according to the website intends coming back. The website has plenty of stories from last year on it though.

Tenerife Magazine is a lively news magazine online. The link for this and the other publications will be found at the bottom of this article.

There are a number of websites that provide a lot of up-to-date information on Tenerife and forums for discussion. sun4free.com is the leading website of this nature, whilst the Tenerife Forum is a popular online message board site, as its name suggests. etenerife.com is another excellent source of information and news for ex-pats and visitors to the island of Tenerife.

Canary Green is a website devoted to all the news about what is being done here to help the environment and bring about a green future.

English radio on Tenerife

There have been several radio stations to cater for the English-speakers on the island of Tenerife but most have had to close. Oasis FM and Power FM have kept on broadcasting music and news though.

Oasis FM comes from Las Chafiras in the south of Tenerife and plays mostly pop and charting music from the '60s onward. The station has many popular presenters including BBC R1 and R2 veteran DJ Tony Blackburn.

As you would expect the station keeps you up to date with the latest news, Tenerife weather and sport. It is also the publisher of the newspaper Canarian Weekly.

Power FM also plays popular music and "Golden Oldies" and its team of presenters features many performers from Tenerife's live entertainment and cabaret circuit including Katy Kennedy, Val Richardson, Gordon King and Rick Porter.

Shame that some of Tenerife's foreign language publications did not survive the recession... but maybe they will be back when the economy picks up.

I am surprised to hear newspapers were free in some locations and sold at others. Maybe that's why they had to close? Hopefully the stronger newspapers will be able to return soon.

Thanks for posting that info, Colin! I have tried contacting Atlantis using the contact form on their website but they never respond. Where are they actually based so I could perhaps physically visit them?
